Tri Ethylene Glycol (TEG)

Tri Ethylene Glycol (TEG)

Triethylene Glycol, abbreviated as TEG, is a colorless liquid alcohol with the chemical formula C₆H₁₄O₄. TEG is considered the third member of the dihydric alcohol family and is produced in the direct hydration process of ethylene oxide, along with Monoethylene Glycol (MEG) and Diethylene Glycol (DEG) as by-products.

Product Specifications
TEG is an odorless, non-flammable liquid with high viscosity and boiling point. It is highly soluble in water, acetone, ethanol, glycerin, acetic acid, and aldehydes, but insoluble or sparingly soluble in diethyl ether and oils. This compound is preferred in applications requiring a higher boiling point and lower volatility compared to DEG. Triethylene glycol is considered a safe, stable compound with low toxicity.
Global TEG Market
TEG consumption depends on the industrial scope of each country. China, India, and Russia are among the largest global consumers. Russia, due to its high natural gas production, is considered an emerging market for ethylene glycols. Middle Eastern countries such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar also show high consumption due to large gas projects. Iran produces TEG with 99% purity and holds a significant share in the global market.
Market Analysis
The use of TEG in various industries is on the rise. Its organic and cooling properties make it a key material in applications such as HVAC systems and natural gas processing. According to Data Bridge Market Research, the global TEG market value was about USD 751.17 million in 2021 and is projected to reach USD 1028.02 million by 2029 (CAGR 4.00%).
Production Method
TEG is produced through the oxidation of ethylene in the presence of a silver catalyst. Ethylene oxide is first generated, which is then hydrated to yield glycols including MEG, DEG, TEG, and tetraethylene glycol. Global consumption of TEG is estimated to exceed 175,000 tons per year.
Applications
1. Oil and Gas Industry
Used as a dehydrating agent for natural gas; prevents line freezing and is recyclable.
