Triethanolamine (TEA) 85% - 99%
Triethanolamine is a clear, colorless liquid that may emit an ammonia-like or fishy odor during storage. Its vapors can irritate the eyes and mucous membranes.
Description
Triethanolamine (TEA) is a clear, colorless liquid with an ammonia- or fish-like odor. Its vapors are heavier than air, and it has a density lower than water (6.1 lbs per gallon). When burned, it produces toxic nitrogen oxides.
Hazards
Handling triethanolamine requires great care as it is harmful to humans and the environment. Contact with TEA can cause damage to the eyes and mouth. For more detailed hazard information, refer to the MSDS provided by PETRO ARSESS.
Packaging
Due to its liquid state at room temperature and corrosive properties, TEA is supplied in 230 kg polyethylene drums or IBC containers to minimize corrosion risks. Corrosion-resistant containers are used when necessary.
Applications
- Production of quaternary ammonium compounds for the textile industry
- Production of quaternary ammonium salts for dyes
- Used as a catalyst and acid neutralizer in condensation reactions
- Intermediate for the production of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and other chemicals
Production Method
TEA is produced via a condensation reaction between ethylene oxide and ammonia at 30–40°C and 71–304 kPa. The molar ratio of ethylene oxide to ammonia in this process is approximately 2.0.
Safety Notes
TEA liquid may cause irritation to eyes and skin.
This amino alcohol neutralizes acids and produces salt and water in exothermic reactions.
Chemical incompatibilities of TEA include:
- Isocyanates
- Organic halogen compounds
- Peroxides
- Acidic phenols
- Epoxides
- Anhydrides and acid halides
In combination with strong reducing agents such as hydrides, it produces flammable hydrogen gas and reacts violently with strong oxidizers.
