Sodium Sulfide 60%
Sodium sulfide is a yellow, flaky solid available in both anhydrous and hydrated forms. Its chemical formula is Na₂S. It is soluble in water and slightly soluble in alcohols. This compound readily oxidizes when exposed to air and has a characteristic odor similar to rotten eggs.
Description
Sodium sulfide has a wide range of applications, including as a coagulant, coloring agent, in leather tanning processes, oxygen remover in water treatment, toning agent in photography, sulfur removal in the textile industry, and in oil recovery operations. With the increasing demand for clean water, the global market for sodium sulfide is on the rise.Production Method
Sodium sulfide is mainly produced through the chemical reduction of sodium sulfate:Na₂SO₄ + 2C → Na₂S + 2CO₂
It can also be produced on a small scale by reducing sulfur with sodium in ammonia:2Na + S → Na₂S
Storage
Store in a dry, dark place and avoid direct sunlight. Maximum storage temperature is 40°C.Applications
- Leather industry: The main use of sodium sulfide in leather is as a liming and hair removal agent in leather production.
- Mining: Used in mineral processing and extraction, with increasing use in this industry.
- Water treatment: Acts as an oxygen remover, coagulant, and metal precipitant.
- Photography: Used for toning black and white photographs.
- Oil industry: Used in oil extraction and recovery operations.
- Pulp and paper industry: Used in kraft processes for pulp and paper production.
- Textile industry: Acts as a sulfur, chlorine, and bleaching remover.
- Paint production: Used in the production of plant-based and sulfur dyes.
- Chemical intermediates: Used in the production of rubber, detergents, and agricultural products as sulfide and sulfomethyl agents. Also serves as an auxiliary in cellulose production.
Safety Notes
- 60% sodium sulfide in flake form is a hazardous product.
- This compound is corrosive to metals and causes burns upon contact with skin and eyes.
- Toxic if ingested and very dangerous for aquatic organisms.
- Contact with acids must be strictly avoided as it releases toxic hydrogen sulfide gas (H₂S).
- For more information on handling, storage, and first aid, refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
