Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG) is one of the most widely used organic compounds in the chemical industry. Its chemical formula is C₂H₆O₂, and it is considered the simplest type of glycol. It is also known by names such as ethylene alcohol, dihydroxyethane, and hydrocarbonic acid.

Physical and Chemical Properties of MEG
MEG is a colorless, odorless, and toxic liquid with a sweet taste that remains in liquid form at room temperature. It is produced through the oxidation of ethylene to ethylene oxide, followed by hydration. The final product is obtained with high efficiency under neutral or acidic conditions in the presence of excess water.
Main Applications of Mono Ethylene Glycol
1. Polyester and Polymer Resin Production MEG is used as a raw material in the production of polyester fibers, polymer resins, and plastic bottles (PET). The textile, packaging, and plastics industries are the largest consumers of this compound.2. Automotive and Industrial Antifreeze A common application of MEG is the production of antifreeze and coolant for cars, airplanes, and HVAC systems. Its low freezing point and high heat transfer capability prevent engine freezing and overheating.3. Gas and Refining Industry In the gas industry, MEG is used as a dehydrating agent to remove moisture from natural gas. It also finds applications in chemical processes and the production of certain organic carbon compounds.4. Other Industrial Uses Other applications include use in paints, adhesives, printing inks, leather industry, shoe wax, screen cleaners, and capacitor electrolytes.

The Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, with over 45% of the global market share, is the largest producer and consumer of MEG. Countries such as China, India, and Taiwan have the highest consumption due to the growth of textile and packaging industries. In 2018, MEG imports were valued at $14.8 billion, with China alone accounting for 61.2% of this market.

MEG Production Method
Mono Ethylene Glycol is produced from ethylene and ethylene oxide in the presence of water and a silver catalyst. The process includes the following reaction:
C₂H₄O + H₂O → HOCH₂CH₂OH
In the final stages, distillation under vacuum separates by-products such as diethylene glycol and triethylene glycol from MEG. Some producers have developed innovative methods for higher purity MEG production with fewer intermediate steps.
Packaging and Storage Conditions
MEG is supplied in 230-liter drums, IBC tanks, isotanks, and corrosion-resistant polyethylene containers. The recommended storage temperature is 2–8°C to prevent glycol decomposition.

Braskem (Brazil) and Haldor Topsoe (Denmark) launched a project in 2017 to produce MEG from sugar instead of fossil fuels, marking a significant step towards green PET production and reduced environmental impact.
