Diethanolamine (DEA)
Diethanolamine is a secondary amine and diol with the molecular formula C₄H₁₁NO₂. At room temperature, DEA appears as a white solid, but due to its high moisture absorption, it is usually observed as a clear, viscous liquid.
Description
Diethanolamine (DEA) is a secondary amine and a diol, which is typically seen as a white solid at room temperature. However, due to its hygroscopic nature, it often appears as a clear, viscous liquid.
Hazards
DEA requires careful handling as it is hazardous to humans and the environment. Contact with DEA can cause eye and oral injuries. For more information on hazards and safety precautions, refer to the PETRO ARSESS Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
Packaging
Due to its liquid state at room temperature and corrosive properties, DEA is supplied in 230 kg polyethylene drums or IBC containers. Containers must be made of corrosion-resistant materials to minimize risks associated with corrosion.
Applications
- Active surfactant in various industries
- Corrosion inhibitor in industrial systems
- Removal of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) from natural gas in oil and gas industries
Production Method
DEA is produced by the reaction of ethylene oxide with aqueous ammonia. This reaction also produces monoethanolamine (MEA) and triethanolamine (TEA). Product ratios can be adjusted depending on the proportions of the raw materials.
Safety Instructions
General Guidance: Follow safety and health precautions before administering first aid. In case of an incident, consult a physician immediately and remove the affected person from the hazard area.
- Skin Contact: Wash skin with soap and plenty of water. Seek medical attention if irritation or injury occurs.
- Inhalation: Move the person to fresh air. If symptoms persist, consult a physician. Provide oxygen or artificial respiration if necessary.
- Eye Contact: Rinse eyes with clean, low-pressure water for at least 15 minutes, opening and closing the eyelids. Seek medical attention if irritation persists.
- Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs, lean the person forward to prevent aspiration. Rinse mouth with water and seek medical attention immediately. Do not give anything orally to an unconscious person.
