Calcium Chloride 80% - 96%

Calcium chloride 80%–96% is a white, crystalline solid with a wide range of applications across many industries. It dissolves easily in water, forming a clear and colorless solution. Calcium chloride is typically produced by the reaction of hydrochloric acid with limestone and is available in both anhydrous and hydrated forms.

Physical and Chemical Properties of Calcium Chloride
Calcium chloride (CaCl₂) 80%–96% is a compound of calcium and chloride ions that is solid and odorless at room temperature. When dissolved in water, it releases a large amount of heat and is available in flake, granular, or lump forms. Calcium chloride has a high moisture absorption (hygroscopic) property, so it must be stored in conditions that minimize contact with air. The food-grade type has a purity of 94% to 96%, while the industrial grade is produced with a purity of 78% to 80%.
Production Methods of Calcium Chloride
1. Extraction from Natural Sources In this method, calcium chloride is obtained from brine solutions found in lakes and underground reservoirs. After purification, it is used for industrial applications. 2. Chemical Reaction of Limestone and Hydrochloric Acid In this process, limestone (calcium carbonate) reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce calcium chloride and carbon dioxide gas. This method is mainly used for producing food and pharmaceutical grades.
Main Applications of Calcium Chloride
1. Oil and Gas Industry In oil and gas well drilling, calcium chloride is used as a drilling fluid to maintain wellbore stability and prevent formation damage. It is also used as a completion fluid to clean drilling mud. 2. Road De-icing One of the most important uses of calcium chloride is as a de-icing agent for roads and highways. It absorbs moisture and generates heat, melting ice and snow and improving road safety. It is also used to reduce dust on unpaved roads. 3. Food Industry In the food industry, calcium chloride is used as a firming agent for fruits and vegetables, as a preservative, and as a flavor enhancer. It helps maintain freshness and texture. 4. Pharmaceutical Industry In pharmaceuticals, calcium chloride is used to regulate electrolyte balance in the body and to treat calcium deficiency. It is also used in some injectable formulations and calcium supplements.
Environmental Impact and Summary
Although calcium chloride has many applications in industry, agriculture, and medicine, its release into the environment may lead to soil and water contamination and affect natural ecosystems. Its production processes may also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. Therefore, responsible use and proper waste management are essential.
Safety Notes
  • Avoid direct contact with skin and eyes
  • Use gloves, safety goggles, and a mask when handling the substance
  • Avoid contact with metals such as zinc or sodium due to the risk of flammable hydrogen gas formation
  • Do not store near sulfuric acid and corrosive metals
  • Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for handling, transport, and first aid measures
