Industrial Applications of 17% Aluminum Sulfate

• Water Treatment: Aluminum sulfate is used as a coagulant in drinking water, wastewater, and industrial effluent treatment. It helps precipitate suspended solids, organic matter, and heavy metals, making water safe for human consumption and the environment.
• Pulp and Paper Industry: Used to improve brightness and quality of paper, it also acts as an additive to enhance paper strength during printing and finishing processes.
• Textile Industry: Aluminum sulfate serves as a mordant in textile dyeing, helping colors adhere better to fibers and increasing color stability and durability.
• Firefighting: Used as a fire suppressant for Class A fires (such as those involving common combustible materials like wood, paper, and fabric).
• Agriculture: Acts as a soil conditioner and pH regulator, and can also be used as an insecticide to control mosses and algae.

Safety Information

Toxicity: The oral lethal dose (LD50) is greater than 5000 mg/kg, so acute toxicity is considered low.

Overexposure Symptoms: May cause skin and eye irritation. Inhalation can lead to headache, nausea, and respiratory tract irritation.

Hazards: Contact with skin and eyes may cause burns or severe irritation. Inhalation of dust or mist may harm the skin.

Ingestion: Consuming large amounts can damage the digestive system, causing nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and bleeding, which in severe cases can be fatal.
