Description

Bentonite (OCMA – API) belongs to the family of layered silicate clays and has a three-layer structure. In this structure, an octahedral aluminum layer is sandwiched between two tetrahedral silica layers. The tetrahedral sheets are composed of SiO₄ units, and each tetrahedron is linked to adjacent layers through three oxygen atoms. Bentonite contains hydroxyl (OH) groups located at the center of hexagonal rings. The interlayer spacing in this structure is about 14 angstroms, which can vary between 9.6 and 21.4 angstroms due to the water absorption capability of smectite minerals.

Due to its high water absorption and retention capacity, bentonite is widely used in many industries. It can absorb up to 12 times its own weight in water, making it highly useful for drilling mud, sealants, and cat litter.
