Bentonite (OCMA – API)

Description

Bentonite belongs to the family of layered silicates and has a three-layer structure. In this structure, an octahedral aluminum layer is sandwiched between two tetrahedral silica layers. The tetrahedral sheets are composed of SiO₄, with each tetrahedron connected to adjacent sheets through three oxygen atoms. Bentonite contains hydroxyl (OH) groups located at the center of the hexagonal rings. The interlayer distance is approximately 14 angstroms, but due to the water-absorbing ability of smectite minerals, this distance can vary between 9.6 and 21.4 angstroms.

Bentonite and Its Key Applications

Due to its high water absorption and retention capacity, bentonite is widely used across many industries. It can absorb up to 12 times its weight in water, making it highly useful for drilling mud, sealants, and cat litter.

Notable Properties of Bentonite

• High moisture absorption: Can absorb multiple times its weight in water, suitable for drilling, water treatment, and detergent production.
• Swelling ability: Expands when in contact with water, filling voids; used in dam and canal sealing.
• Ion-exchange capacity: Can adsorb and release various ions, applied in soil and water purification and chemical fertilizer production.

• Drilling mud: Used in oil and gas well drilling to facilitate operations, cool the drill bit, and prevent wellbore collapse.
• Sealant: Applied for sealing cracks and holes in concrete, asphalt, and other materials.
• Cat litter: Absorbs moisture and controls odor, making it suitable for pet bedding.
• Baby powder: Helps absorb moisture and prevent rashes and skin irritation.
• Cosmetics: Used as a thickening and stabilizing agent in personal care and beauty products.
• Pharmaceuticals: Employed as an antacid and laxative in some medications.
