Toluene
Toluene is a colorless aromatic hydrocarbon with a thinner-like odor, used as a solvent in the paint, resin, printing, polymer, and pharmaceutical industries. It is available in grades ranging from 85% to 99.9%.
Description
Toluene is a clear, colorless aromatic hydrocarbon with a distinct thinner-like odor. Due to its high solubility, it is considered one of the most widely used solvents in various industries. Toluene naturally occurs in crude oil and coal tar and can also be produced in industrial processes such as gasoline production, coke, and various fuels.Physical and Chemical Properties
- Physical state: Colorless liquid
- Odor: Distinct, thinner-like
- Flammability: High
- Group: Aromatic hydrocarbons
- Application: Chemical solvent and raw material in various industries
Safety and Health Effects
Toluene can enter the bloodstream through inhalation or skin contact. Prolonged exposure may affect the nervous system, vision, hearing, and muscle function. Use of toluene during pregnancy may slow fetal growth. Continuous exposure can cause kidney, liver, and immune system problems.Industrial Applications
- Paints and resins: Solvent in polyester resins and epoxy, polyurethane, and nitrocellulose thinners
- Printing industry: Solvent for inks and cleaning printing equipment
- Polymer and petrochemical industries: Production of toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and polyurethanes
- Varnish and cosmetics: Nail polish thinner and production of benzoic acid for perfumes and creams
- Pharmaceutical industry: Solvent in the production of drugs such as ibuprofen, morphine, and amphetamines
- Fuel additive: Octane booster in gasoline
- Chemical synthesis: Production of TNT, benzoic acid, and benzoyl chloride
Consumption Share by Industry
- Benzene production: ~50%
- Xylene production: ~20%
- Solvent in paints, resins, adhesives, and rubber: ~12%
- TDI production: ~8%
- Other chemical and pharmaceutical uses: ~10%
Production Methods
- Catalytic reforming from BTEX
- Pyrolysis of gasoline for ethylene and propylene production
- Coal tar and styrene production
