Sulfonic Acid (LABSA)

Sulfonic Acid (LABSA)

Sulfonic acid, with the general formula RS(=O)₂–OH, is a group of sulfur-containing organic compounds in which: R = an aryl or alkyl organic group
S(=O)₂–OH = sulfonyl hydroxyl group This acid is one of the very strong acids and has highly corrosive effects. Therefore, preventing contact and following safety precautions during its use and storage are extremely important.

Description
Sulfonic acids are very strong acids, acting about one million times stronger than acids such as acetic acid and benzoic acid. This substance is colorless, non-oxidizing, water-soluble, and sometimes exhibits detergent properties. It is widely used in the chemical industry, but due to its strong acidity, safety precautions must be followed during handling, storage, and use. Pipes and industrial equipment that come into contact with sulfonic acid must be made of corrosion-resistant materials. Exposure to this acid may cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and respiratory system, and in severe cases, it may cause burns. Therefore, establishing occupational exposure limits is essential to protect workers. In industries, sulfonic acid handling is usually performed in closed systems with proper ventilation. If such systems are not available, respiratory masks and protective equipment must be used. Safety warnings must also be posted in the workplace.
Applications
  • Drilling fluids
  • Detergent production
  • Healthcare sector
Safety Notes
  • Contact with skin and eyes causes irritation and burns.
  • Inhalation of vapors or particles may irritate the nose, throat, and lungs, and can cause coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.
  • This compound is a strong acid and reacts exothermically with bases; significant heat is released when diluted with water.
  • Although this product is not classified as hazardous to the environment, preventing environmental contamination is recommended.
